Welcome to Elephant Mountain Vineyards!
Started in 1995 by the Hattrup Family, Elephant Mountain Vineyards is owned and operated by Joe Hattrup.
Elephant Mountain Vineyards is situated on a unique site located high on the southern slopes of the Rattlesnake Ridge at the base of Elephant Mountain, near the center of the new Rattlesnake Hills Appellation in the greater Yakima Valley Appellation.
The vineyard sits on a series of gentle, southern-facing slopes at elevations from 1320 to 1460 ft. The vineyard is located above the irrigated portion of the Yakima Valley and is surrounded by dry land shrub steppe. The vineyard has a unique micro climate, perfect for growing and maturing wine grapes.
The vineyard is drip irrigated from a deep well. The soil profile consists of a sandy silt loam averaging 2 ft. in depth which lays over a gravelly, calcareous sub surface.
The rocky south facing slopes of Elephant Mountain surrounding the vineyard create a significantly beneficial heat sink. This feature, combined with the elevation, keeps the site warm and dry, day and night, throughout the growing season. This allows for maximum accumulation of heat units, low humidity, few frost and mildew concerns, and moderate daytime highs to reduce heat stress on the foliage and fruit.
A unique advantage due to our elevation, slope and southern exposure is a long frost-free growing season which allows for extended hang time and ideal fruit maturation.
Over the past 10 years Elephant Mountain Vineyards frost-free growing season has been, on average, thirty days longer than most vineyard locations in the Columbia Valley.
The vineyard is comprised of 120 acres. Planting was started in 1998 with additional acreage added yearly. Currently the vineyard has 87 acres planted to 4 Cabernet Sauvignon clones, 3 Syrah clones, Merlot, Sangiovese, Viognier, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Mourvedre, and test plots of Marsanne, Roussanne, Tempranillo, Grenache, Malbec, Barbera, Cinsault, Counoise, Dolcetto, Pinot Gris and Carmenere.
Our focus is on growing high quality grapes. We combine the favorable aspects of our site with drip irrigation and hand harvesting to deliver the grapes our customers desire.
We look to continue to develop the vineyard acreage by 20+ acres and look forward to talking with vintners interested in sharing in this excellent site. Check our website regularly as we are continually updating information.
